Tenikwa Rehabilitation Center

This wildlife awareness center near Plettenberg Bay clearly has conservation and information at heart. It offers not only a wildcat experience but also inquisitive meerkats and many different birds are on display from their welcoming area. Guests are taken on a pre-arranged guided tour to meet the captive-bred cats that now live here. During the tour you will see the charismatic cheetah; ZweLakhe the gorgeous leopard and see some of South Africa’s lesser indigenous cats, such as servals and caracal. Unfortunately, as with many of these guided trips- I always find myself a bit rushed by the guides.

I did one of their cheetah walks which involved an exhilarating walk- sometimes a stroll but often a run and some sitting too- with two of their cheetah. The walk was extensive and interesting and worth every cent to do.

I really appreciated the message Tenikwa is giving to tourists- about the struggles many of these animals and their brethren have to survive. I think it’s important for people to know this. I felt comforted in the knowledge that my support helps to find their rehabilitation and release program.
