Thai Tragedy

Sixteen tiger cubs were rescued at a  Thai border post in the last few days…is there still hope for these magnificent cats?

Darren Longfu was arrested at the Thai border last week after he attempted to smuggle 16 tiger cubs into Laos. He was paid around $300 to deliver the cubs and they were destined to be smuggled illegally from Thailand-a smuggling hub for protected animals. They must be worth an absolute fortune.100 years ago, there were 100,000 tigers roaming the forests of Asia.Today, there may be only 1200.Thailand has previously agreed to tighten controls to stamp out tiger smuggling. how serious are they? Tiger cubs are worth a small fortune in the Chinese medicine and restaurant industry. Thailand has the dubious honour of being a huge dognapping area too.

On the other hand….Take a look at what Chris Poole is doing with the tigers: Big Cat Rescue, a non profit educational sanctuary,home to over 100 unwanted, abandoned or abused exotic big cats. Mission – to provide the best home they can for the animals in their care. I know its a pity they have to be in a home in the first place. It seems like it’s a safer place for them than in the wild right now.

What you can do…

  • Find a Big Cat Sanctuary near you that does not condone breeding;
  • Support men like Chris Poole
  • Join a global organisation such as WWF
  • Visit and search Tiger
